Daikin is once again the Title Sponsor of the “Spirit of America Golf Classic,” held this week at BurningTree Country Club. The tournament, established in 1967, pits the nation’s top college and amateur golfers against each other in a unique “college team and individual” 72-hole format.
In addition to sponsoring the tournament, 24 Daikin employees took part in a pre-tournament competition that raises money for local charities. All told, 112 golfers, including many of the college players who will compete in the Classic, participated.
Previous Classic winners include Stewart Cink (Junior Champion, 1989), Heath Slocum (1995 Champion), and Decatur native Matt Gourgeot, the 2016 winner.
Forrest Keith, Daikin General Affairs & Training Manager, said supporting the Spirit of America Classic is one more way the company can help make Decatur and Morgan County a better place to live.
“Daikin is highly committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and a force for good in all of the communities where we have a presence. The Spirit of America Golf Classic is a great way for Daikin and its employees to support the larger Spirit of America Festival and to help fund worthy local charities,” Mr. Keith said.
Decatur’s Spirit of America Festival is among the largest Fourth of July festivals in the South, offering family games, summertime field competitions, live entertainment, and a host of food and craft vendors. The festival is held on July 4 at Point Mallard Park and culminates each year with the presentation of the Audi Murphy Patriotism Award.\
